Earthy Goods Deep Dive: Lavender, Oak Moss & Sage — A Forest Floor in Your Home

Earthy Goods Fragrance Oil by Sunsum

There is a specific scent that exists only in one place: a forest floor in early spring, when the first rain of the season releases the accumulated chemistry of winter decomposition and new growth together. Geosmin from wet earth. Linalool from the earliest flowering herbs. The faintly mossy, mineral quality that you can only smell if you are on your knees, face close to the ground, paying attention.

Earthy Goods is my attempt, in fragrance form, to carry that experience indoors.

Lavender: The Familiar Ground

English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) contributes linalool and linalyl acetate — the primary aromatic compounds responsible for lavender's characteristic clean, slightly sweet, slightly sharp quality. In Earthy Goods, lavender functions as the accessible entry point: the note you recognize immediately that makes the more unusual materials feel approachable rather than strange.

The lavender here is not spa lavender. It is country lavender — slightly rougher at the edges, more herbal, with more of the camphorous quality of the actual plant and less of the domesticated smoothness of commercial lavender fragrance.

Oak Moss: The Earth Itself

Oak moss (Evernia prunastri) is one of the oldest fragrance materials in perfumery and one of the most chemically complex. Its characteristic scent — earthy, woody, slightly animalic, unmistakably forest — comes from a blend of orcinol compounds, fatty acids, and aromatic esters that occur naturally only in this lichen. It is irreplaceable. No synthetic can fully capture what oak moss does in a blend: it grounds everything above it to something real, something biological, something old.

Sage: The Clarity Note

Garden sage (Salvia officinalis) adds the sharp, slightly medicinal, clarifying quality that prevents Earthy Goods from becoming too heavy. Its primary aromatic compound, thujone, has a quality that smells both ancient and clean — like a kitchen where something herbaceous has been cooking, or a hillside in Provence in high summer. In this blend, sage is the note that wakes you up inside the earthiness.
