Fall Equinox Energy: The Psychology of Equal Day and Night and How Fragrance Grounds You

Grounding Collection by Sunsum

The fall equinox — arriving around September 22–23 each year — is the moment when day and night are equal in length. It is one of four cardinal points in the solar year, and across virtually every pre-industrial culture that tracked seasonal cycles, it was treated as a moment of significance: balance between opposites, the threshold between the seasons of light and the seasons of dark.

The psychology of this moment is real, even for people who do not follow an intentional seasonal practice. The body tracks light levels via the suprachiasmatic nucleus in the hypothalamus, which adjusts circadian rhythm, sleep timing, and mood-regulating neurotransmitter levels in response to daily light duration. As day length shortens past the equinox, melatonin production shifts and serotonin availability decreases for many people. The equinox is the beginning of that process.

Grounding at the Equinox

The most effective response to the unsettled feeling of seasonal transition is not to resist the transition but to meet it with groundedness. Grounding practices — anything that brings attention to the body, the present moment, and the quality of stability — help the nervous system register that it is safe to let the season shift without alarm.

Fragrance is an unusually effective grounding tool at this transition because it is physically present and immediate in a way that mental practice is not. The right fragrance says, in sensory terms: this is solid, this is here, this does not change with the season.

Earthy Goods Fragrance Oil by Sunsum

Earthy Goods (R532) is the equinox fragrance. Its oakmoss and earth base is deeply anchoring — it smells like the ground itself, and it says “still here” in the most literal sensory terms. Use it as the fragrance for a deliberate equinox moment: a short sitting practice, an evening walk, a moment of stillness before the season fully turns.

Timeless Musk (R528) — frankincense, myrrh, and sandalwood — adds a layer of ceremonial depth to equinox practice. These are ancient grounding ingredients, each with thousands of years of use in ritual contexts across multiple traditions. Frankincense in particular has documented anxiolytic effects: the compound incensole acetate activates the TRPV3 channel in a way that produces mild anti-anxiety and warmth-perception effects. Use R528 in combination with R532 for an equinox ritual that is both earthy and ceremonially resonant.
