The Composition

Neroli is steam-distilled from the blossoms of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium). It is simultaneously citrus, floral, and slightly green — one of the most complex aromatic materials in the perfumer’s palette. In No. 2 Foundation, neroli provides the top note: the first thing you notice, bright and slightly bittersweet, that resolves into the heart as the more volatile citrus compounds evaporate.

Jasmine sits at the heart of the fragrance. Jasmine sambac — the warmer, more full-bodied jasmine species used here — is one of the few floral materials that is genuinely unisex in its olfactory effect. It does not read as feminine in the way that rose tends to. It reads as lush, warm, and slightly animalic in a way that appeals across gender categories and across aesthetic preferences.

Bergamot anchors the base. Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) is the source of the distinctive quality in Earl Grey tea — that slightly sweet, slightly aromatic citrus that is softer and less sharp than lemon.
