The Fall Equinox Ritual: A Grounding Practice for the Season of Balance
The fall equinox arrives on September 22–23 this year. It is the threshold between the seasons — the moment when day and night are equal before the balance tips toward darkness, before the leaves turn and the year begins its long exhale. In many traditions, threshold moments are treated as times for clearing and intention: releasing what belongs to the season that is ending, opening to what belongs to the season that is coming.
This is a simple equinox practice that uses smoke clearing and scent anchoring to do exactly that.
What You Need
White Sage & Copal Smudge Stick (K100 — Red Chili & Bay Leaf) for clearing.
Palo Santo Natural Incense Sticks (K202) for intention-setting and grounding.
A fireproof vessel (ceramic, abalone shell, or cast iron).
A window or door that can open.
Quiet time — 20–30 minutes, preferably at dawn or dusk on the equinox day.
The Practice
1. Open a window or door. Smoke clearing works with ventilation. The smoke you carry through the space needs a way to exit, carrying what it has collected with it. Opening a window or door to the outside is not optional — it is part of what makes the practice complete.
2. Light the smudge stick. Light the tip of the White Sage & Copal smudge stick (K100) and allow it to catch before blowing out the flame and letting the tip smolder. The smoke should rise steadily.
3. Walk your space. Move through every room in your home, guiding the smoke into corners, along walls, around doorways. As you walk, carry the intention of releasing what summer was — the pace, the brightness, the energy of expansion. You do not need to speak this intention aloud; holding it in attention as you move is enough.
4. Return to a still point. When you have moved through the whole space, return to a single spot in the center of your home or in the room where you spend the most time. Let the smudge stick rest in your fireproof vessel.
5. Light the Palo Santo. Light a Palo Santo incense stick (K202) and hold it or set it in your vessel. Palo Santo’s scent — sweet, woody, with vanilla and resin notes — is traditionally used for setting intention and welcoming positive energy. Breathe it in consciously for three full breaths.
6. Set your autumn intention. Before the Palo Santo burns down, name — in words, or internally — one quality you want to cultivate this autumn. Not a goal; a quality. Presence. Warmth. Steadiness. Creativity. Let that quality be the intention the season opens with.
