Habari gani ? (What's Happening ?) - Kujichagulia, the second day of Kwanzaa

Kujichagulia, Self-Determination, the second principle of Kwanzaa
Today, Dec 27th, marks the second day of Kwanzaa where we celebrate the principle of Kujichagulia (Self-Determination). We must take responsibility for creating and shaping our world with our own aesthetic vision in order to access a well-lived life. Finding humility, time and space to define our own identity, cultural contributions and speaking for ourselves is not without its on perils.
Akilah Jackson, Creator of the Sunsum Brand

You Can Do Anything With Self-Determination and True Grit

As a black woman owned brand, I have been bootstrapping this small business, with what little bit of coins I was able to hold on to from earned wages pre-COVID.
  • There weren't any angel investors, other than my ancestors.
  • The only CARES ACT emergency funding available to me, was with what little I had managed to save over the years.
With only a 1 year-old business, who started months before the pandemic, there's no business credit, loans, just prayers.
Finding humility for me usually means, I have to roll up my sleeves, and get down in the dirt. My life experience and structural position in America, has taught me that in this world, you have to hold on to your faith and you got to go and get yours because closed mouths don't get fed.
You also have to make sure you are good and tired of excuses, red tape, setbacks, and any other obstacle getting in your way.

When the race riots where happening during the summer of 2020, all I could think is that this is exactly why I'm here and why I need to find the strength within me to carry forward with the brand because we all need to heal and decolonize our spaces in order to end racial trauma.

Being "grounded" means that you're present in your body and connected with the earth. When you're grounded, you allow yourself to feel centered and balanced no matter what's going on around you. Grounding can help detach one’s feelings of distress and emotional pain and focus on the environment around you. Grounding  requires time, space and self-awareness.

Being "centered" means that you have a reference point or place to come back to when life challenges you and attempts to push you off balance. Centering is a way to put things back into perspective despite perceived obstacles through self-awareness and mindfulness practices. Centering is closely related to grounding techniques and often paired together in mindfulness practices. Centering oneself builds resilience while grounding sets a foundation and platform to begin centering.
