Fall Home Clearing: A White Sage Ritual for the Energy of the New Season
October is the traditional season for clearing practices. In many pre-industrial cultures, autumn — the time before the deep cold of winter — was when homes were physically and energetically prepared for the season of long nights and indoor life. The harvest was in; the preparation for winter began; and part of that preparation was cleaning, clearing, and resetting the home’s energy for the season of rest and reflection that was coming.
This is a complete home clearing practice for October — for the transition into the most interior season of the year.
The Two Smudge Sticks
White Sage & Copal — Eucalyptus & White Tallow Berry (K102). This is the clearing stick. Eucalyptus adds a bright, clarifying quality to the white sage’s deep clearing character — together they are excellent for spaces that feel heavy or stagnant, for clearing the energy of a summer that was particularly intense, for resetting a room where something difficult happened. Use K102 for the main clearing walk through your home.
White Sage & Copal — Red Chili & Bay Leaf (K100). This is the welcoming stick. Red chili and bay leaf have traditional associations with protection, warmth, and abundance — the qualities you want to establish in a home that is preparing for winter. Use K100 after the clearing walk, to set the intention of the new season.
The Practice
Prepare. Open windows and doors throughout your home before you begin. The smoke needs an exit path. Gather your fireproof vessel and your matches or lighter.
Clear with K102. Light the Eucalyptus & White Tallow Berry stick and let it catch. Walk through every room in your home — every corner, every closet, along the walls — with the intention of releasing the energy of the past season. Move slowly. Let the smoke settle into spaces before you move on.
Return to center. When you have moved through the whole space, return to the heart of your home — the living room, the kitchen, wherever the family gathers. Let the K102 finish in the vessel.
Welcome with K100. Light the Red Chili & Bay Leaf stick. As you stand at the heart of your home, breathe in the smoke consciously and name — aloud or internally — what you are welcoming into the new season. Warmth. Rest. Creativity. Presence. The qualities that belong to the long evenings and the time turning inward.
Close. Let K100 finish naturally in the vessel. Close the windows. The space is reset.
